@markoinlaThe most comprehensive oral history of the regionThank you for taking on this project and your continued work on the topic.

CbcoffeeguyGreat podcast. What happened?I really enjoyed the podcast. I initially started because I wanted to know why we entered the conflict in the 1990's. Any updates?

Cop Shoot CopExcellent, and Engaging As WellEnjoyable every time, and puts together a compelling narrative in each episode.
-
TJwheelieExcellent- please continueOne of the best history podcasts I’ve listened to Unfortunately it stops early in WW2, PLEASE come back and finish the story

//chameleon\\Absolutely beautifulThis podcast is unlike anything I have listened to in a very long time! It is very well put together and the story telling is relatively humerus but still telling the real history of the region! You HAVE to listen to this!
-
kate_from_californiaFascinating history; very well presented!Alex, I love your show! I’ve listened to it twice, and it was just as good the second time XD I started listening while traveling in Croatia, and it has inspired me to want to travel to the rest of the Balkans as well. Please keep going! Can’t wait to continue the story. Much love from California.

RobynTheWriterReally good infoMy husband and I were on vacation in Croatia and Bosnia and in our quest to better understand the region, discovered this podcast. It’s really well scripted, with good information, and is told in a way that is engaging and pulls you along. We’re only through season one and are already back home, but we plan to listen to the whole series! Really really good.

Happy Japanese LearnerGreat Outline of Under-Discussed History! As a Croatian-American, I’ve always wanted to learn more about my culture, but the sources available in English are limited, especially if you want to go before the 1990s. And as important as the 90s are, my family left during the WWI era, so my own ties with the region predate the conflicts of my childhood. I really like seeing how the Balkans functioned under the various empires and great powers, and how the various nationalist movements began. I appreciate how Alex gets into the history, rather than going “the Romans conquered the region which formed the provinces of Illyria and Dacia... then some Slavs moved in... one, two, skip a few, 1914!” which is how trying to learn about Yugoslav history often goes, at least outside academia. Very fun, engaging, podcast to stand as a counter to “they just have been fighting for thousands of years” ahistorical takes.

PrivatePiggAmazing!I’ve been listening to history podcasts for years, and I read a lot of history, as well. This podcast is excellently done, both as podcasts are concerned, and also in the way it tells a historical narrative. 6 stars.

pedrobmaloGreat content, poor audioMaybe we could all chip in and buy Alex a decent mic & audio mixer :-)

Ken PreiserExcellent storytelling!I just wish it were recorded better..

MoninaLExcellent Podcast! This is such a great podcast. The minutes fly by listening to Alex, he is able to create an engaging, incredibly well-researched and entertaining program. Congratulations and thank you for sharing your research with us!

MineMastaContent: great, Sound: TERRIBLE!Agree with above—great content! Just wish it wasn’t physically painful to listen to it! Reeeally needs to invest in some sound engineering. He oscillates between too quiet to hear and PAINFULLY SHRILL with no in-between. I adjusted all the settings I could to account for it and still a painful listen. Really needs to practice volume attenuation when he speaks.

MithapeAbsolute gem!Seriously splendid work. From a Polish perspective, the history of southern Slavs was never really thought in school so it is super interesting to understand differences and similarities between the history of north and south of Slav lands:)

Wildling9Garmy strongI've been a huge fan of Ralph's for years. This is a great replacement for the radio show (which went to $h1+ after Ralph). Keep up the excellent work!

TraerIaWow!This young man, has put a lot of research into the subject. It is well thought out, very well executed, and I cannot say enough how this podcast keeps me Listening over and over. Please keep up the good work, and if you ever finish this podcast, move onto another subject that you enjoy. I will certainly be looking and listening to you in the future. ( Sidenote. Turned down your introductory music, just a tad. When moving from one podcast to the next, the music comes blaring through a lot louder than your voice)

-
XseesGreat podcast, fun to listen toCovers an exceedingly difficult and complex history in an engaging way. Host is fun, too - narration doesn't get tediously boring like some other history podcasts.

DavidJFaberA comprehensive and even-handed history of YugoslaviaAlex does a masterful job of detailing the history of Yugoslavia, mostly starting around the outset of the 19th century and moving forward from there. Alex couches the analysis in a play-by-play retelling of historic events, but he does so mindful of the events that would dominate the history of Yugoslavia in popular imagination and memory (namely: TIto's Yugoslavia and the wars of the 1990s) and attempts to draw out the complexities that were the hallmark of Yugoslav history. The analysis here is deep, historic, and honest. It doesn't rely on the "ancient hatreds dividing ethnic cousins in the Balkans" lazy popular myth that so many people repeat when discussing the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s. It doesn't rely upon the myth that only Tito could have kept an otherwise disparate pack of squabling backwards peoples together. Instead, the History of Yugoslavia is a thoughtful, well-researched, and in-depth look at what happened, why it happened, what were the outside and inside forces at play, and why it led the Balkans to be a place that Winston Churchill famously stated "produces more history than it can consume." I highy recommend this podcast to anyone who is interested in the history of any of the Yugoslav republics, Yugoslavia itself, the Ottoman Empire, the Austro-Hungarian empire, World War 1, World War 2, slavic history, communist history, of world history in general.

TravBurdettFantastic and well organized!Really enjoying the show! Binged to present on business travel and am really enjoying it. Well organized, good pacing and great information about a region of the world far too ignored by Americans

Stuck in the heatAll meat and no potatoesMy wife and I are on a road trip through the Balkans and have been listening to podcasts and watching documentaries on the region. The audio quality could be a lot better but the content keeps it at a five star rating. The creator has done a fantastic job of cutting through anything unnecessary in the history and touching on the critical events. This explains so much about this part of the world and we definitely fell a lot more informed about the cultural differences we are seeing in the area. Great Work!!! Thanks for putting this together. We've listened to all the episodes so far. Can't wait to see what's next!
-
Pidgey208BrilliantAn amazing distillation of all the important historical aspects of this region leading up to the present day. This podcast is like a ketogenic diet of history, all your getting is meat and no silly potatoes or salad. Although each episode is only about 30mins it is so crammed with facts, presented in a very naturally gfowing and enjoyable way, it takes me closer to an hour to listen to since I have to pause it so often and let it all sink in. Can't wait for more of this podcast to come out!! Keep up the good work.

Routesy LoverGreat!Excited to find this overview of Yugoslavian history! My Croatian girlfriend and I are on a road trip and this was the perfect prep for my upcoming trip to Croatia! I recommend sound mixing the audio a bit as sometimes the peaks are too loud. Content is great!
