    Great listen
I stumbled across this podcast by accident and now I can’t stop recommending it to my fellow history nerds. The premise is fantastic, and I especially appreciate how it dives into lesser-known facts about the presidents—their decisions, personalities, and the roles they played in shaping the foundation of our country. It’s well worth the listen, and honestly, it makes me sound smarter every time I share something I’ve learned. Keep up the great work!

    Love this show!
I will admit that this is only my 3rd Podcast. Ever. I’m a smidge late to the Podcast Party. Anyhow, this show is amazing! I love how all the great information is presented, especially Jessica jumping in to say …What? Who’s that, again?, Wait what???, etc. She’s a great representative of us listeners! I’m only on Season 4, and so looking forward to all of your upcoming episodes. BTW, I’m a 61 year old retired AA Flight Attendant living in southern Germany. That info is given in case you’re interested in demographics. Im a huge historical fiction reader, but your podcast has robbed me from my books! Thanks, guys!

    Could Be Better
I absolutely love learning about the interesting and unusual things relevant to the people who were instrumental in making our country what it is today. The research is great and Howard presents it all in an engaging way. I do enjoy some of the banter between Howard and Jessica, but I think this podcast is not the place for Jessica to share her political leanings or opinions. At the end of the day, she is entitled to her viewpoint and opinions and I can make the choice to not listen to any more episodes.

I just started watching this it is very good 👍💯

    Love!
Gets better with every season!! Love their dynamic!

    Drop Jessica
Howard has done his research and is well versed in his subject matter, it seems like Jessica walks in unprepared and makes unnecessary comments that make the podcast unlistenable. I had to bow out 15 minutes in.

    John Adams’ Diet
Wish I could say I learned anything. Banter- just simple banter.
  • Anna18732
Forget the haters, Jess is the best part of this pod
Wife is hilarious and I love the back and forth. The personality of this podcast is light and funny, not a college history lecture.

    Interesting but…
Sorry but his wife’s interjections while he’s telling the story with her “humor” or her “omg”-style questions ruin it for me.
  • Amos5:4
    I really, really tried but……
So interested but absolutely cannot bear Jessica’s interruptions.

    Mostly Amazing
I am thoroughly enjoying the stories and history lessons. Thank you for creating this podcast. Unfortunately, I feel like Jessica detracts from the podcast, with sophomoric comments and unsophisticated banter. I would value hearing a more poised and contributing co-host.

    It’s a great podcast but…
As a historian, I really enjoy this podcast. Howard presents each episode with both research and humor. The only detractor is Jessica’s voice. Her inflections and voice tone make her sound like a teenage Valley girl rather than an adult. These gets more and more grating as one continues to listen to an episode.

Good information ruined by wife co-host
Such interesting information, but the wife’s interrupting commentary and presence are so distracting and out of place I couldn’t listen long enough to get said information.
  • Boonoodle
    Wife needs to zip it
I was excited for this podcast but his wife won’t shut up and let him tell the story
  • Katedarby
I’m really sorry to do this.
I hate giving a less than perfect review but I think Howard needs to be a solo host along with his various guests. I absolutely love the content and info he presents, however, Jessica’s input totally wrecks the flow and does not add anything humorous or productive to the conversation. I really enjoy the solo episodes but have a hard time with the random interjections.

    History snacks
The pace of this podcast is perfect. Each episode focuses relatively narrowly not only on a certain president, but on a particular topic relating to that president. Howard is very focused on the story to be told, and Jessica interjects some humanity and allows for just a bit of breathing room (and has a great voice!). Their affection for each other is subtle and lovely. It just feels comfortable to listen to them. Like listening to your really nice, smart parents talk history from the back seat on a roadtrip. Maybe if you’re a major history buff who wants a dry recitation of facts this isn’t as satisfying, but for someone like me, with no working memory of a single history class I’ve ever taken, this is a palatable and fascinating journey. This is not to say they dumb it down or meander off topic — they’re pretty efficient, and manage to plod right along without bogging the listener down or whizzing through a dense narrative that forces the listener to go back and revisit to understand what they’re talking about. Thanks y’all!

    The voices
I can not take Howards snooty, nasally voice which makes me hate Jessica’s too. I was looking forward to loving this podcast but I can’t get over the voices.
  • Ali oof
    Yikes
Liked some episodes until I got to Burr S6. My main interest was learning more about Founding Fathers, not about Jessica’s political views.

    Interesting topics
Interesting topics. The constant commentary takes away from the flow of the show.

Sorry to agree with so many others. Howard obviously knows his history and sure Jessica is a wonderful and smart person but absolutely adds nothing to this podcast other than stopping the flow. Unfortunately I can't continue with this although I find the topics so interesting
  • AWahe
What a solid listening experience ...
These two are great at exploring some of the lesser known history of our founding fathers and other presidents. Who doesn’t like a good old, opossum story?
  • RyansRadar
    The show is good!
I just want to point out some of the previous reviews with low rating are full of unwarranted and un deserved sexist criticism.
  • Michele510
Great for history buffs and the casually curious alike!
If you consider yourself a history buff, or even just someone who wants some lesser known insight into the past, you’ll love this show! Howard and Jessica cover so many interesting topics and stories, you truly learn something new in every episode. One of my favorites so far has to be Mount Vernon’s Stone of Secrets! Can’t wait to hear more!
  • DoggoneIslandLife
    I Tried
I made it part way through to season 2. I just couldn’t anymore. I wish this was Howard telling us interesting stories. And maybe some various co-hosts who are also informed and well versed on the topic. The constant interjections that are just filler words and incorrect statements makes this podcast unbearable.
  • cdesros
    Disappointed history buff
I recommend Howard do this podcast solo. The banter is so aggravating and Jessica contribution is annoying. I tried making it through an episode from multiple seasons and couldn’t do it.
  • PngwenTX57
    Repetitive “cool” words
Started with the Aaron Burr podcast. This would be good. But the amount of times they were obsessed with saying their hip term “rizz” (for charisma) was distracting, then annoying. Trying too hard to be funny and hip wasn’t landing. Too bad because their story telling is good.

    I'm obsessed!
From the very first episode I was hooked! I need my history to be entertaining, and Jessica and Howard deliver! Not only are the episodes well researched, the production quality is top notch, and the banter and dynamic between them is so fun. It's like hanging out with your fun, funny, (and smarter) best friends. I listen to dozens of podcasts each week, and their show has made it into my top 5 every week. If you want your history lesson to be fun, this is the show for you! FYI, I love the banter between Jessica & Howard. If this were a solo show it would not be as fun.
  • BD8437
    Great topics, audibly unpleasant
Love the subject matter, what a great idea. Though why not start with GW, did I miss that episode somewhere? I’d binge this whole series if it wasn’t so unpleasant on the ears. He has persistent vocal fry while hers fluctuates. Their mics are so close that I can hear her mouth breathing while he’s talking. The whole experience is too grating to enjoy the story.

    Keeping it real
I have so enjoyed this podcast. When I was little I thought that Lincoln was the next president after Washington. Thanks to both of you for making history interesting and relatable.
  • FD insights
    Nix the co-host
Love the stories, and enjoy Howard but not Jessica’s banter nor comments. I think the show/podcast would be richer with, simply, Howard’s narrations and perspective. And he could bring on different guests to provide some of the banter and commentary, but please, not his spouse. I do not like their dynamic. She comes across airless and somewhat aggressive, and unnecessarily foul mouthed.

    More research
Listening to the first episode featuring John Adams eating chocolate for breakfast was interesting. I was disappointed that you didn’t know anymore than that.. for example you could have researched the history of chocolate in his time. How was it different than today’s chocolate? Expensive? Hard to get ? I was hoping you’d touch on more history of it to include with Pres Adams enjoyment of it in the a.m.
  • Gage 2004
    Informative, but distracting
Howard does a great job presenting, very informative. If he was the only host, it would have been five stars, however, Jessica’s constant, non-contributing, interjections are really annoying and take away from Howard’s presentation. It would be nice to have an edited version of Howard only.
  • Hill&Dale
    “Hum, Ok, Ok”
I wanted to love this podcast, so many interesting topics. I bailed just five minutes in, right after the female co-host’s sixth “Um, Ok, Ok…” responses.
  • eat.me
    Almost there
This podcast is an easy and fun take on history. Howard does a great job of explaining and bringing you in to the material. I don’t enjoy Jessica’s banter as it never adds to the conversation. It’s like having an interesting history teacher coupled with an impulsive high schooler who interrupts the lecture with nonsense. I’d enjoy this more if Howard was solo.
  • Bshropsh
    Potentially Great
Howard is the best. He’s well informed, prepared, and able to view and discuss stories within the historical context. The other co-host, Jessica, is none of those. A solo podcast with just Howard, or an interview style podcasts with other subject matter experts would make this podcast so much more enjoyable.
  • Ayemyyy
    Happy to find this one!
Thank you Howard and Jessica for the knowledge and fun listening.
  • eaton76
    Idiot
What’s the point of having a utter moron serve as a co-host? If you’re looking to hear some moronic and uninformed commentary then this is the podcast for you
  • Villadonna
    Jess is the best!
I’m a longtime listener and appalled at how insulting and stupid some people are. I love the back and forth banter between Howard and Jess and think the show would NOT be as good as a solo venture. Keep doing what you are doing the way you have been - I love it!
  • kate bleck
    Interesting, and Annoying
The stories are interesting. However the interruptions and constant sounds that Jessica make are distracting and annoying. I would enjoy this show so much more if it was a solo endeavor.
  • culturecultshow
    Binging!!
I met the hosts at a conference and ever since then I have been BINGING their content. The epsiodes are so clean and to the point. I love how much I am learning about our presidents and that they aren’t the perfect little humans we think they are. This is definitely a podcast now in my rotation!
  • LongcommuteWA
Jessica doesn’t add to this at all
Jessica’s lack of knowledge about any of these subjects is very distracting. Is she the stand-in for the audience? Her input is not valuable, stick with Howard and interviews with subject matter experts.
  • DoctorSheep
Starts out rough - start with Season 2
The first couple episodes are less polished but they really find their rhythm by Season 2 and by Season 3 they’re on fire. The stories are interesting and unique and their chemistry is great. So glad I found this podcast and stuck with them!
  • Sophie's cello
Great historical stories, and worth listening to!
But I have a hard time, listening to the stories with all of the constant comments, and interruptions to the story. They do not add, but take away or diminish the storytelling. I look forward to hearing all the stories if this these interruptions can somehow be diminished or stopped please.
  • History chick…..
    Has potential but currently cringey…
The show has potential with interesting topics but I feel like I am listening in on an insufferable conversation between a married couple. Also, one of the participants really adds no value to the conversation… seriously, every time that person speaks I cringe.
  • History pal
    What a shame
I would like to listen to your podcast but the language is excessively explicit and there is unnecessary foul language.
  • NASCAR 7493
A podcast where you don’t even realize you are learning!
I have been listening for a few years and have been a patron as well. While I have enjoyed all your pods, I have to comment on the episode I listened to today as it stopped me in my tracks. The interview with Karen Cox was phenomenal. I admit I really didn’t understand why removing these confederate monuments was important and embarrassed that I never truly realized how terrible it is that they persist. Thank you for bringing attention to this. I can’t wait to read her book and learn more. Keep up the great work and bringing a unique twist to history podcasts.

    History made fun
These 2 bring so much joy and authenticity to the topics. He knows so much and his passion for truth comes through. Thanks for stepping out and creating this content. I devour each episode. ❤️

    History made fun
I would have paid attention in school if history would have been taught this way.
  • JTDenton
    Fun and Smart
I was skeptical at first, then fell in love with these two. Great combination of perspectives and lots of new information about Presidents - which is extremely hard to find. Plus, I laugh out loud - which has never happen in a history podcast!
  • KC75238
    Excellent!
Love the content and banter! Keep up the great work!
