Where the Stars Fell

Fiction #113

Dr. Edison Tucker is having a very weird life. Not being able to die tends to color things that way. Lucille Kensington is the literary scene’s biggest enigma. That’s just the way she likes it. When the pair find themselves sharing a cabin in the strangest town in America— Jerusalem, OR— they’re prepared for a housemate situation from hell. What they’re not expecting is tidings of a stranger sort: Ed is the antichrist, Lucy her guardian angel, and if they can’t find a way to work together soon, the rapture is set to take first the town, then the world… but neither of them know that yet. Welcome to Jerusalem, OR, where what doesn’t kill you is just another mystery.

    Confusing Sound Effects
Every romantic relationship in the series relies on sound cues that are VERY hard to pick up on. I didn’t know anything was happening between the two main characters until I read the episode synopsis.

    Good, but flawed
Good stuff first, the writing for the story and the writing for the character dynamics are great. The actual performances are all very well done, honestly not a bad performance in the series. But it has its problems. The overarcing plot feels like the generic theology plot that most people write when wanting to takle the topic of religion, can't really say I'm a fan of it. Honestly if it was just the two leads hunting cryptids I'd be good with that. Also the sound effects are a bit diffifult to understand. I've had several episodes where I no idea what I was supposed to be visualizing from the sounds I was hearing. A few mehg episodes, maybe three overall, but still absolutely worth listening to and I'm looking forward to whats next.

    Yes!
Totally have listened to more than once! Love the voice tones and how they make it more of a book. Love how this is book form! 😁 love to see & hear more

Adore the vibes but would love more descriptives.
I absolutely love the chemistry between the characters and the voice work. All the performances are wonderful and I really enjoyed the development of Ed and Lucy’s relationship. I also absolutely adore the foreshadowing and call backs in the story. As others have said if you like Supernatural, X-files or Good Omens you’ll probably enjoy this. I’ll definitely be continuing this podcast! With this praise however my biggest issue with the series is as follows: The story would benefit so much from more description. While the sound work can be good, it’s simply not enough to compensate for the consistent absence. This doesn’t become a huge detriment until Dear Listener (Season 2: Episode 9) which discusses many topics one of which being accessibility, neurodivergent experiences and POC representation in media. The episode just ends up unintentionally calling out the issues in the story many of which are brought about by the lacking descriptions of characters, actions and events. Ultimately making it feel extremely hypocritical. I will say I feel there is improvement after this episode on some of these elements. So while I hate to say this, this episode may be best if skipped since plot and character wise it doesn’t progression much if anything.

    Pure garbage
I tried but I couldn’t do it. I made it through 1 in a half episodes when I gave up. Horrible acting combined with terrible writing. I don’t have an issue with swearing but when your characters day 1,000 F bombs in 10 minutes it shows that you’re not creative enough to come up with captivating dialogue. I would pass on this one.

    Great characters
Starts out as the X-Files, then morphs into Good Omens. Characters are great, but the writer seems to have the impression he is writing for a visual medium. Worth the time!

Not sure creator understands what a podcast is
When I started this show, I assumed that my inability to tell what was going on was a stylistic choice or early installment weirdness. It isn’t. In fact, it’s getting harder to parse what’s happening to the characters as I go along. The core issue seems to be that the creator fundamentally does not get that podcast listeners can’t see what’s going on, and therefore you have to TELL US. The scripts do include more notes and blocking, but that is the literal opposite of an excuse. I truly don’t get how you can write an entire episode about audiobooks and accessibility and yet fail to notice that those same audiobook readers need audio podcasts. Honestly, it’s a pretty hilarious fail.

    Was Interesting Then Turned
Into some sort of morality tale re: neurodivergent people. There was a lot of great setup then that plot point came in like a wrecking ball.

    Great
Unique, fun, touching. Lots of good work and talent here. Great chemistry b/t Ed and Lucy. Some episodes hit personal buttons., which I like. Can’t stop listening. A couple episodes don’t seem to move the story forward (Ex. the threesome b/t Lucy Ed Prim? Seems out of character for uptight British angel.) I have a pretty good imagination and I understand a story without narrative but sometimes long pauses and/or sound effects don’t really capture what is going on since there are no visuals…

Interesting, but sometimes hard to follow
I’ve really been enjoying this story and am interested in what happens next. I especially have been enjoying S2 (it is nice once they stop being at each other's throats). But there are also a lot of things that confuse me. It can be hard to follow the scene because not enough is said out loud, and I only realized how much I was missing when I looked at the script and realized there was a LOT going on that’s ends up being “off screen”. It just feels like a lot of stuff is implied and left to the listener to intuit. Its one thing if it is supposed to be ambiguous, but if it is in the script, I wish it were communicated better. I’m hoping the next season flows a little better.

    I’m falling in love
There are instances where I feel the sound isn’t quite right or that situations require more or better exposition given we can’t SEE the characters or their actions but the more I listen, the more I can feel myself falling in love with these characters.

    Love it!
This was a feed drop on one of my favorite podcasts Starship Iris. I started it and I am on episode 4 now with no plans of slowing down. The story is solid and the voice acting is on point! Just listen to the first episode and you will be hooked as well.

    Solid With Opportunities
Overall, this isn’t a bad show but some of the audio choices don’t always work. There are often gaps/silences that don’t align with story so they don’t add to the drama. There is a tendency for characters to say something along the lines of “Look at that,” without fully explaining what is happening. Finally, while this show clearly wants to appeal to a neuro-divergent audience (that’s a good thing) it also seems to relish in triggering a misophonia response almost every episode. That’s not a good thing.

    Love, Mostly
Great story, characters, acting. Nope to preachy detours like the one about audio books and authors needing to social network. Yikes. No. A sensitivity read does not (and should not) have to mean such a yuck of a dead zone. Privacy is fine. Choices other than the ones that attempt (and will inevitably fail) to please everyone and check every political box (often conflicting, so literally no way to do it all) are fine. More than fine—inevitable, charming, and real. We’ll see if I hang in past this.

Great show, Newt Schottelkotte is perfect
Excellent show. Newt Schottelkotte is a perfect actor for this kind of show. Sounds very natural, unscripted (if that makes sense). Looking forward to hearing the next show they put out. My only complaint with the show is the short episodes. That’s annoying.

    Just...Why...?
Not sure why the creators thought it'd be a "fun little quirk" to make the main character talk every time she eats, but it makes me want to stab her in the throat. Once could be overlooked, but when it happened again the third episode, I had enough. Shame, it has a lot of potential and a really good concept.

Great story with an unexpected twist!
This is a great podcast!!! From the description it sounded like a podcast I would enjoy, with a supernatural-ish, X-Files ish type story. I didn’t expect to LOVE it, and I do! I couldn’t figure out the title or the wonderful theme music (which seems a bit incongruous to the tone of the narrative) until the last episode of S1 and S2 E1, and it is worth the wait. I’ve grown to love Ed and Lucille, and I am fascinated with what happens next. Listen and enjoy!

    Dead Air
The story itself is very entertaining, but their sound choices are not always great. There are multiple instances of dead air that last long enough that I’m worried the podcast got accidentally paused. There are also having breathing and grunting that don’t add anything to the narrative and can be confusing.

    Amazing!
I was not anticipating liking this but this is frickin’ fantastic! Highly recommend.

    AD/HD
My number one favorite thing about this show is that the neurodivergent characters actually feel like they were written by/for neurodivergent people. If they’re not, I’m thoroughly impressed by the research that went into this. I genuinely relate to the characters and feel represented in ways that I haven’t before. As someone with ADHD and Dyslexia , Ed’s tangent about how she was made to feel stupid just because she didn’t think like neuro-typical people really hit close to home with me.

    Meh
It’s not terrible, the production quality & acting are solid, but it somehow felt like a half-step up from Supernatural fanfic. If that’s your bag, you’re gonna love it.

    One Helluva Good Time
I never know what to expect from this podcast and that’s my favorite part. The story of WTSF has evolved and expanded its strange roots in unexpected ways due to some carefully and brilliantly planted seeds.

    Good Script, Great Characters
I'm really enjoying this podcast. It's well written with compelling characters.

Came for the Cryptozoology, stayed for the character development
In the span of one (far too short) season, this podcast has earned a slot as one of my favorites. I think the writing is fantastic and every actor is absolutely amazing and really bring the characters to life. The way they handled the topic of ableism specifically is honestly one of the best I've seen in any media, especially how they wrote the autistic character (I'm leaving that vague in case of spoilers). I'm super excited to see where this story goes in season 2 and learn more about the characters and the world they're in. If you're thinking about giving this show a shot, DO IT. It's an easy listen and extremely worth it.

    Fantastic
I have no idea what is going on in Jerusalem, but I can’t wait to find out along with Dr Edison (I think Lucille know more than she lets on). Ed and Lucy’s interactions are so cute!
