Low Life

93

This horror-comedy features a chupacabra exterminator and a marine biology student who become unlikely allies while solving a monstrous murder.

Ever since the Florida swamps went feral a few years back, Brad Marlin has been killing chupacabras. But on a standard house call for a student new to the area, things go horribly wrong. Brad’s coworker is murdered, and not, Brad suspects, by the standard sucker they’ve all gotten used to. A new monster is in their midst.

But there’s more than one secret hiding in the swamp: a missing millionaire’s daughter, a top-secret government project, and a radical environmental justice group all collide to give this twisty mystery an explosive conclusion.

Low Life is a Realm production, created and written by Steve Marcarelli and Billy Lalor. Listen Away.

    Amazing and Immaculate
The world feels real in this podcast as we follow two ordinary people with strange cases. It’s imaginative and great for any laughingstock people. It’s horror builds so well and it’s a well-crafted refresher from Realm

    Low life
This a great show. I'm binge listening. My only criticism is that the woman doesn't sound right doing the male lines, and vice versa. They both do an excellent job voicing the characters that belong to their own gender. I love how they switch narrators between scenes. That lets me know when I can take a break.

The Big Lebowski meets The X Files
Florida Man takes the lead in this funny, magnificently macabre journey into swampy weirdness and good-hearted, hapless heroics.

A Wild Romp in the Swamp
If Carl Hiaasen and Dave Barry met in an abandoned sugar plantation in the middle of the Everglades, and snorted a mountain of coke, and then read ten-years worth of back issues of the World Weekly News, and then dropped acid, and then started writing, they would wake up the next day with massive hangovers and perhaps a few regrets. Once they sobered up, maybe they would listen to “Low Life” and be suitably impressed. This jaundiced joyride manages to send up every trope of the noir private eye genre while simultaneously serving as an exemplar of the form. It is inspired silliness AND a perfect script. Unlike my pointless intro, every detail of this story serves a function — even the hemorrhoid ring. And yet it manages more than few plot twists and shockers. I binged listened over a weekend and I feel good about it. I was smiling (and sober) the whole time.
