TV & Film #136

Every week, Joanna Robinson, Dave Gonzales, and Neil Miller enter the pop-culture discourse with a lively (and occasionally heated) debate pegged to the biggest new releases in film and television. In addition to bringing their own answer, they also consider submissions from listeners and the occasional special guest. Together via rigorous debate and a listener poll, the hosts and audience venture on a quest to find the perfect answer for each of the greatest pop culture questions of our time.

    Jo is an insufferable dullard
When Jo is gone from this earth, who will care or even notice? Imagine your only contribution to this world is recorded musings about other people’s creations? Jesus, that’s depressing. Oh well, at least her spouse and children will remember her….oh wait.

    Like sending time with friends!
Joanna, Dave and Neil are so much fun together. Easy to see they are long time friends with inside jokes and great energy. Really enjoying the HotD discussions!

    Giga-Joanna
Joanna’s a once in a generation podcaster while also being a once in a generation nerd, just incredible stuff (Shouts House of R)

    We get it.
The opening where they each say what they have and have not read in the got universe is so incredibly annoying. It’s not even a funny bit so what is the point of that? And guess what, it’s also the ad for the podcast that you’ll catch often when listening to other podcasts so they double and triple down on the awful bit. That they repeat every episode!! And every ad! It’s an utterly baffling choice.

    Enjoyed the topics!

    Great Podcasters
I have no idea whether they choose their topics or if their hands are tied by the Ringer network but this format and the topics they cover (baseball for opening month?) is just NOT what I loved about these podcasters BEFORE the Ringer acquired them. Back when their “off season tour” between GoT seasons, their non-Ringer show was AMAZING (not too mention how great their GoT coverage was while in season). Now I’ll check in time to time but more often than not, the topics feel forced upon them. The sound design on this podcast is fine but makes me miss Da7e’s production style on Storm of Spoilers. Luckily there’s still the Fighting in the War Room Podcast. Joanna’s wealth and Bay Area life has lifted her further and further out of touch with the rest of us not wealthy folk. Her smugness and elitism feels deeper than ever. I’ve lived in California for 20 years now (both north and south); and Joanna is now the type of person that I feared becoming when I moved from Jersey to California. She feels like the smugness cloud from that South Park episode about the Bay Area and Priuses. Miss you guys and the way it used to be.

MCU crossover content is gross at this point
Want to listen to two writers who have turned their MCU book manuscript into their publisher explain to you why the phase 4 films aren’t as bad as you thought they were when you watched them yourself?! yeah, me either. they don’t actually acknowledge the conflict of interest from that lens anywhere either, they’re just like… “if you notice it don’t call us out on it!”. they’re not smart of funny either, to be fair to them.

    The best!
Would listen to them discuss literally anything! Smartest podcast at The Ringer!!

    Pretty good
I mostly love this show, but every now and then it feels a bit too scripted. Sometimes it seems like the hosts are trying to show off their film knowledge by picking a black and white movie from 1956 seen by less than a hundred people instead of picking the popular movie that grossed a billion dollars. But it’s a fun concept and the best parts of the show are when they actually banter back and forth.

    Staying tuned… for now
I really like the concept & the hosts overall but their delivery & flow makes it difficult to listen to… I don’t think they’re actually smirking as they speak but it sounds like they are the majority of the time… there is also a distracting amount of “um”s… the debates are what makes the show interesting but it undermines the faith in the host’s position when it sounds like they aren’t totally sure of their own opinion… not sure if this is something that can be tightened up with more prep or possibly with editing but there’s too much unconvincing attempts at convincing …

    Big Mouth erasure!
Love the format of this show. But not a single mention of Big Mouth on the adult animation episode? Dense jokes, relatable characters, and probably the greatest single premise ever!

    Winning Trio
I love Lost and that is how I found this trio. Was so happy they came back with this great podcast that relates to pop culture going on but not just a review cast. Great content and fun people to hang out with.

    Good idea for a show
The hosts can make any topic boring.

    Love the chemistry…
The chemistry of the hosts is unbelievable. Love the topics, the research, and the inherit comedy.

    An Excellent pop culture show
The team that brought "A Storm of Spoilers" continues to make your laugh and think each week.

One less host would be preferable
Neil and Dave are pretty great. But it ends there.

    Joanna Fan for Life
I would follow Joanna and her podcasting/writing anywhere and I’m so excited by this Ringer show! The hosts have settled into an excellent format of chatting about the topic at hand broadly, giving a bunch of examples, and then presenting their (and the listeners) top picks. I love the banter they all bring and have loved the dynamics they have brought to all their podcasts.

    Pure silliness
And that’s the point. Delightful to listen to these three gab about anything. When it comes to tv podcasting, Joanna Robinson is the GOAT, and here she’s at her most unleashed. They have the ability to sound like the conversation is happening off-mike.
  • genosairen
    needs some spice
I just feel like they’ve been spinning the wheels lately. Some really boring choices in the past several months, like we really spent a month on zombies?
  • SafetyFirstFish
    My favorite trio!
Love this show and love these 3. I’ve been a listener of them since storm of spoilers days and am so happy that they are now doing this podcast. The format is fun and engaging and I always learn something new!

    The worst thing…
I know this maybe petty but I’m gonna have to unfollow because how did Dr Strange end up on the worst list & not Black Adam or Morbius. Those movies are way worse. It was fun while it lasted.
  • lovetohearmyselflisten
    Hosts rock
LOVE Dave & Joanna. They are an amazing anchor for any guest host, with Dave’s endearing humor and Joanna’s insightful, constructive critiques

    Please dont draft again
Beetlejuice made me wary. Galadriel made me turn it off. The Big Picture has conditioned us to take it serious while having fun. If youre lacking seriousness, just dont do them

    Super fun
I started listening to Rewatchables but now my favorite Ringer pods are Mallory and/or Jo talking about Westeros. Great balance of insight and frivolity lol. The debates are fun— both on their own and alongside a rewatch. Love this podcast
  • Junior Space Lizard
    Awesome
Love the Pod. Detailed, but they still have fun. Joanna almost dropped a “Monday morning quarterback” metaphor in reference to Lord Orwyle in F&B, had she landed that I would have given 7 stars!
  • Jusadonis
    No cackling.
    Now…this is the one.

Story discussions > weekly debates (but you’re great regardless)
Love having all my friends together again talking about a tv show week to week 😊 Please keep this discussing a single tv show format even when HOTD ends! We need/love your insight
  • Eff Cue
    Too much babbling
Do they even discuss the episode? Sheesh what a bunch of windbags!

Why has this become a House of Dragon Pod?
Please get back to what this show is instead of solely reviewing each episode of house of dragon. If I wanted a that podcast I’d subscribe to one
  • Cray 8988
    Love this trio!
I like the concept and the playful interaction between cohosts. I also love the focus they put on feedback and input from listeners! Despite all the other HotD Ringer content, this groups HotD episodes provide different insights from Da7e and Neil, and their chemistry is fantastic!
  • jonrv
    Great premise and awesome hosts
A little different from what the Ringer usually does and a welcome addition
  • artdani
    Stick to the concept?
I’ve really been enjoying this podcast but am not excited about a 10 week format change for HotD. I can already hear Joanna give her takes on the show for many hours earlier in the week on this network and the guys could be guests on ringerverse if needed. I’m watching the show but I don’t think anyone needs that many hours of content. I miss having other fun pop culture topics discussed and will probably just unsubscribe, at least temporarily.

    just like old times
have been listening since Game of Thrones and through the Lost rewatch, so excited to be back in Westeros once again 💗

    My favorite trio is back!
Joanna, Da7e, and Neil are the best podcast trio in the business. Their friendship and chemistry is delightful. I’m overjoyed that they are covering HOTD together. Bring on the Storm! I also love the interactive component with their listeners who they clearly respect and appreciate.

I came back to this podcast because this group did such a great job with the Game of Thrones podcasts back in the day. As a book reader, I really enjoy the Storm section of the pod and give that portion a 5. The Calm was very disappointing. Too much time was spent of uninteresting emails and polls. I think the assumption was that we would all listen to the 3 1/2 hours of the Ringer Verse pod on Dragons which I absolutely can not handle so I’m looking at shorter pods with good info on the show and interesting theories. Please don’t assume we are listening to the Ringer Verse pod and beef up the discussion of the episodes.

    Like old friends…
I quick note to let you know how much I love listening to all of you and enjoy your analysis of all things entertainment! I found you back in the storm of spoilers days via cast of kings. You filled my 90 min (each way) commute and helped me decompress after a long day. Your lost rewatch brought back so many memories! I also regularly listen to FITWR and all your new Ringer content. The new GOT series has encouraged me to listen to your Game of spoilers pod casts again. Thank you for your insight, your analysis, and for your voices. Listening to you is like being curled up on the couch with a warm cup of tea.

    Too Much Mustard
For a show where three people talk each week about film and TV, the high-concept structural stuff is distracting and artificial.
  • Jim Ohio1
    30 Minutes
Subject matter is typically entertaining but the podcast seems to run out of fresh takes about 30 minutes in.

    The Joanna-verse is strong
Happy Joanna is with The Ringer. Happy to have Dave, Neil, and Joanna together on a pod. The Joanna-verse continues to deliver.

    Fun Times for Cinephiles
A podcast based on the type of heated debates you have with fellow cinephiles except this is all fun and no scorch marks. I especially enjoy participating in the live poll after each episode.

Best trio in the business- full stop
I listen to soooo many podcasts and as with ANY entertainment endeavor, the chemistry of personalities is SO important These three win BEST EVERRRR When and where are the Podcast Awards? Got MY vote
  • I, the Swan
    yes! missed this crew
so happy to see this group back together. can’t wait to hear the takes on house of the dragon.
  • brine fly
    Delightful humans
I was turned off by the premise of this podcast: adults arguing about what's the best (yawn). But these hosts are all so lovely and playful and funny - the atmosphere they create together is so inviting, it really draws me in to the content.
  • ofitallofitallofitall
    good chemistry
trio works well together. deducting one point for the absolutely mortifying intro music. another for OVERALL not super creative or inspired topics. please take a super hero topic hiatus.
  • jackmove69
Some of the best podcasters in the business
At this point I would basically listen to these three hosts talk about anything. Loved them on The Storm (Lost) and can’t get enough. This premise of this show sounded weird to me at first, but after listening to a couple I am hooked. I still haven’t figured out how to vote (though I haven’t tried THAT hard).
