THE PBP: VOICES OF BASEBALL

Baseball #117

The PBP focuses on the art of bringing you the game: baseball play-by-play. These are the broadcasters who facilitate the daily relationship with baseball and our teams; how, and why do they do it? Matt Spiegel always wanted to be one, and now gets to walk among them, gleaning advice, stories, and tricks of the trade he'll share with you.

    Wonderful Podcast!
Matt Speigel has such passion for the game of baseball. The show has such great vibes and wonderful guests. I learn new things about baseball and broadcasting in each episode and those things often bring me an even deeper appreciation of the game.

    Another hit
Matt Spiegel hits another one where they ain’t with this tremendous podcast with and about the profession of play-by-play announcers and announcing. After listening to a full season of the Beat the Streak podcast and now missing it, being able to listen to Spiegs talk baseball, announcing, scoring and more fills the void. Incredible guests and conversation.

    Must listen
This is a must listen. Especially if you’re a sports fan. It’s informative, fun and especially with the Joe Buck episodes gives a great insight into him and how he went about calling baseball.

    Nice set of interviews
What I gained is a deeper appreciation for what the announcers bring to the sport each and every night. Doing 162 games, plus some spring training and any postseason games, they are true masters of their craft. I can see the ones who aren’t in the Hall of Fame will join the legends. They always bring the game to life, even those on television. They are our soundtrack of spring and summer, and fans should feel fortunate to have people who get it and not sugarcoat anything (outside of those annoying ad reads). Give us the basics, what to look for on defense, is the runner on first going to steal second? The joy and passion in each voice provides a great listen, and that is the best thing we can ask for in our minds.

    Love it
I have always been fascinated by play by play. It is so interesting to hear the diagnostics of the art and the behind the scenes tactics of how you all tell the story and actions of a game. Thank you for this! Dont give up!

    My favorite baseball podcast!
Spiegel feels right at home in this format. The intros & outros are just as great as the interviews themselves.

Average armchair Play by Play guy
This is such a great deep dive into what goes into being a Play by play person. I love that Matt followed through with this idea. Baseball nerds all around should appreciate and adore this podcast as much as I do. Well done Spiegs

Love this game, love this pod
A great highlight show, full of humor and camaraderie. Host Matt Speigel and producer Ryan Porth ride the rollercoaster of a 162-game season, celebrating the hits and enduring the oh-fers as they join fans in trying to keep their virtual hitting streaks rolling for a shot at $5.6 million.

Best Baseball podcast since Baseball Today!
Years ago, ESPN had a great daily baseball podcast called Baseball Today. It was hosted by Eric Karabell and assorted co-hosts. It was fantastic. Half hour or less summary for the day. Great discussion. Then ESPN destroyed it. They changed it to Baseball Tonight with Buster Olney. It became a terrible podcast. 🤮 I have waited many years for a replacement. It is here. Beat the Streak is awesome with hosts Spiegs & the Porthanator. It revolves around a smart phone game but they do great baseball discussion and throw in great stats unrelated to the phone game. They gave me new baseball podcasting life. Thank you, Spiegs & Porthanator. You two better be back next season in 2023!!!!

This podcast has great content and is a lot of fun! I’ve been playing BTS for ~10 years and this podcast is a very nice daily companion to it.
