Music #194

From touring in the group 4Him to working as a worship pastor to leading a radio show, I've had the opportunity to be a part of the Christian Music industry for the last four decades. I'm Andy Chrisman and I've had the unique opportunity to tour with, record with, and become friends with just about everyone within the Christian Music industry. I think this makes me the perfect person to tell their stories. Welcome to 1 Degree of Andy!

    Amazing Podcast!
Each week I wait for the new episode wondering who it might be. There are so many surprises along the way and excellent interviews. I grew up on Christian radio in the 90s with for him being my favorite group. Thanks for revisiting this history.

Taking A Pleasant Stroll Down Memory Lane
A huge thank you to Andy for taking me down memory lane! I really enjoy the conversations that he has with the artists who made and shaped the CCM music I loved so much in the 80s and the 90s. I can’t wait to see who is joining him next.

    Great Stuff!! Refreshing!!
This is such a great podcast.. It is so fantastic that someone is capturing the history CCM.. It is great to hear all the connections between the artists and especially how they got started..It is something I have always wondered about thru the years.. The 80’s Christian rock and metal scene was such a big part of my life.. it helped solidify my walk with Christ and help get me through some hard times..I personally would love to hear from some of my favorites like; Nancy Jo Mann from Barnabas, Ojo Taylor from Undercover , Darrell Mansfield, Glenn Kaiser or like Dale Thompson from Bride….I highly recommend plugging yourself into this podcast..!!!! Great stuff! Keep it up brother

As someone that grew up on Christian music in the 90s and 2000s, it’s fun to reminisce about that point in time and to hear the rest of the story behind the bands and singers that played a part in my faith journey. Andy asks great questions and makes for a great conversation.

    Usually excellent
To be fair, can tell who Andy actually liked pre podcast and who Andy knew in passing and others told him to get on the podcast. The Wayne Kirkpatrick episode was quite a letdown as it was clear Andy knew little about Wayne and would have rather discussed songwriters he had worked with in 4Him. So only current criticism would be ask the folks recommending those Andy isn’t a personal fan of what questions they would like to hear that guest answer instead of just filling time with whatever comes up. But really good 90% of the time that I listen.

    Thank you!
For those of us who agree that contemporary Christian music was at its peak in the late 80s and 90s, this podcast is awesome. It’s so interesting to hear the stories of how that music and those musicians came to be, and how God has worked in and through them o touch countless lives, even beyond their music careers. Thanks Andy!

    Great show!
Great interview with Joel from PFR! It also made me aware of your Podcast, which allowed me to listen to your two-part interview with “the guys”. I’m looking forward to listen to more!

    My CCM fix
As a teenager in the 80s and early 90s, I closely followed contemporary Christian music. I listened to so many artists and faithfully read CCM magazine. The music continues to hold a special place in my heart but I rarely encounter people who hold abroad knowledge of this musical world. Finding this podcast has been so exciting to me. I appreciate Andy giving us the opportunity to hear from these artists so many years later.

Every episode is a unique blessing!!
Having grown up in and closely following CCM during this era, I knew that this podcast was going to be right up my alley. A year+ into listening somehow I keep being pleasantly surprised that every time I get excited about the “time capsule” being uncovered by Andy and the interviewees each week, more importantly I walk away being encouraged and challenged in my walk with Jesus!! Thank you, Andy!

    Keeps Getting Better
Each episode is great and I think it can’t get better. Then the next episode comes out and wow, it's better than the last. I love not only the talk about the great music but even more so the conversations about life. Thank you for reminding us about God’s grace and faithfulness.

Behind the Scenes Down Memory Lane
I promoted concerts during much of this golden era. I love hearing these conversations that give us glimpses into what was happening behind the scenes, hearing from old friends, and meeting others. So glad Andy is sharing his friends with us!

    Worth Every Minute
Dive deep into the Christian Music Industry of the 90’s and early 2000s. Andy brings so many people from the industry to light and how the music was brought to life from touring, song writers, bus drivers, agents, record labels and friends. Each episode is like sitting down with a friend for coffee and chatting about the good times. I have learned so much about the music and faith of everyone who was involved in the GREATEST ERA of Christian Music. Thanks Andy! Such a great show. Support this my friends! Bring this music back!

    Golden Era
It’s been an amazing experience to listen to all the people that helped shape and inspire my Christian walk. I was a huge 4him fan as a teenager during the 90s and early 2000s, but loved other artists as well. Hearing CCM artists reflect on their past experiences has been eye-opening. Andy is so gracious, humble, and you can tell how much he admires the people he brings on his show.

    Incredible
It’s been a fantastic experience to hear stories from these incredible artists. To hear the stories and how they began and the impacts they are still having has made even better. I grew up on many of these artists and it’s caused me to go back and buy their music and add it back to my playlists. Thanks Andy and the artists for taking the time to do this.

    Blast from the Past
As a believer who grew up (and still do) listen to my favorite CCM artists and then was a concert promoter for several years, it is wonderful to hear intimate conversations with many of those I’ve met at concerts, festivals and churches along the way!

    Reliving my teen music
As a teenager and church musician in the late 80’s and into the 90’s. CCM music was what I listened to. This podcast really takes me back to those days to the music and artist I grew up on. I really enjoy it.

    Amazing and much-needed show
Andy has such a unique background to bring to this, and the name of his podcast is perfectly appropriate. He has been in the trenches of Christian music for decades. I remember swooning over his voice as a member of TRUTH, and then bought every recording of 4Him that I could get. He has put in the relentless hours of touring and rehearsal and writing and recording. And now he invites others from the same business and the same era to share their stories and behind-the-scenes drama and thrills. What’s not to love? I was greatly impacted by the music videos that Stephen Yake directed during those years (including some by 4Him and Carman especially), and Andy got HIM on the show! I didn’t think anyone else knew who he was! And this guy is talking about how he fought to produce these amazing, impactful videos. Also, I have been a die-hard fan of the group First Call since their very first recording. I am such an avid fan that I started a fan-based website for them in the early 2000s! They aren’t as well known now, and Andy just had them on the show! (And it was a fantastic episode, btw) If you are a fan of any type of Christian music from the 80s forward (vocal, metal, country, rap, etc.) then you need to subscribe to this podcast. Guaranteed you will find episodes that will thrill you and take you back. (You can thank me later.)

Looks like some great interviews here!
I just discovered this podcast via Jamie Rowe’s Facebook page and his upcoming interview. I’m looking forward to making my way thru the entire library. I just started out listening to the interview with Roger Breland. I’m not sure how it is I’ve never heard of him or Truth before! It was a great interview that helped me learn where some of the groups I listened to came from!

    Excellent!
These podcasts take me back to my youth group days and absolutely love it! In addition to the memories, I’m learning so much about the behind the scene stuff that I never connected. I look forward to Mondays to see who’s next on the show.

Love this podcast! Takes me back to going to all these great concerts in south Florida! I found myself remembering and singing the different versions of Deck the Halls while listening to the 4Him episode! Thank you for bringing this time back to life!

    Awesome podcast!
I just found your podcast today so I’ve spent most of the day listening to previous episodes. My favorite so far is with Jeromy Deibler from FFH. I love your candid conversations with all these artists

    Sentimental journey
Fellow Tulsan Binging all this. Absolutely love it. Idea: broaden scope to people in the CCM-osphere. Can’t interview Carmen? Interview his manager. Also, go further back. Interview Andre Crouch’s manager/etc. you’ve hit on a lot of it already. PS: I accepted Christ at Andre Crouch’s concert, FBC Denton,TX circa 1973. Keep it up!

    Blast From The Past
If you love Christian music from the 80’s and 90’s, Andy’s weekly conversations are a great way to reminisce on music you would think most everyone has forgotten about. I find myself pausing the podcast and hopping over to Spotify to re-listen to singles and deep cuts that shaped me. Can’t recommend more!

Reminiscing with my 70s, 80s, and 90s favorites
Andy I am really enjoying this episodes. Steve Camp singing “Lazy Jane” was a great memory of my teenage years. Michael O’Brien has been a favorite male vocalist for a LONG time. I was one of those people who helped his love song project at #1 for the month of May that it was released. Janna and Greg are so cool, and Jody McBrayer a legendary voice. Clay Crosse another favorite. I would love to hear your fellow band mates share some tour stories. I have been intrigued by Marty’s healing story.

    So awesome!
This podcast takes me straight back to my teenage years as a rabid CCM fan. My best friend and I dedicated thousands of hours listening to music, especially 4Him! Thank you for this blast from the past! So exciting to reconnect with Andy and all the amazing artists of the 90’s & early 2000’s.

    Susan Ashton
Being a young adult in the late 80s and 90s I loved all things CCM. I played drums in my local church. We worked with the youth and brought contemporary Christian music to our kids. We didn’t have Christian radio in ENC. We would buy an cassette or cd and consume it all. Listening and learning all the songs on an album. 4Him was a group that we just latched on to. We knew of the guys from Truth through our friend Mike Childers the drummer with Truth for many years. Susan was a cd I purchased based on a recommendation of a friend. Again loved her voice and the songs really spoke to me and my wife. It was great listening to this podcast and learning more about Susan and Andy. Conversation was very relatable and has me bingeing all of Andy’s podcasts.

The Albulm “Walk On” was a lifesaver for me. I was going through a divorce and the song “Let The Healing Begin” carried me through some very difficult days and reminded me that there could be better days ahead. Still to this day it has a special place in my heart. I loved the whole CD and still do. I’ve listened to every episode of this podcast and was wondering when you would talk about the quality of this release by 4Him. It stands out to me as my favorite. At that time I gave a copy of it to a new believing friend who wore it out. Very impactful!!

Blast from the past—and the best!!
I have enjoyed hearing my all-time favorite artists speak candidly about CCM from the 90s, which is my favorite era of music. When I was a teenager, there was nothing more exciting than walking into our local Christian bookstore and seeing that one of my favorite artists had released a new album. Those were the days!! I’m looking forward to the upcoming episodes.

Superb listen & trip down memory lane
I love this podcast. Andy is the perfect host with his background and unique history in the industry. What I particularly enjoy is how he focuses the time and conversation around the artists’ history and stories about how things happened. Those are the kinds of convos that, as a longtime CCM fan, totally pique my interest and I can’t get enough of. How were you signed? Why did you switch labels? What were you thinking when this album released? How did the group handle it when this member left? You can tell that as a host he’s also a fan and that makes the podcast so enjoyable and helps it stand out from a lot of other music podcasts with more generic questions that gloss over the past. It’s also helped me dig into old albums I haven’t listened to in ages and also find some hidden gems I had previously passed over.

    Brings back memories!
This podcast is bringing back youth group memories. I have been a huge fan of Andy since Truth. Now to have him interviewing so many artists that I grew up loving and formed my teenage years is awesome. The interviews are so candid and free that you feel like you are in the room with them. Now as a music minister I am also learning from these artists what worship means to them. Thank you Andy for the past and the now!

    THANK YOU!!!
Thanks you so much, Brother, for your podcast of all of these awesome Christian artists. They’re some of my favorites for sure!! I love finding out where they are today if they aren’t recording or if I haven’t seen them lately. So glad that they are still serving the Lord!! Also, thank you for the memories!! Music totally takes you back to some great times and these podcasts have helped with that, as well. Looking forward to more.
