A Very British Cult

News #172

The sinister life coaching company that takes over your life. Catrin Nye investigates.

In early 2019 Jeffrey Leigh-Jones from Portsmouth got a life coach. Someone to mentor him in life and help him realise his business ambitions.

Two years later, Jeff had sold his house, his relationship was in pieces, and he had handed over tens of thousands of pounds. And he wasn't the only one. In this eighteen-month investigation for the BBC, journalist Catrin Nye and her team expose control, intimidation and fear at a mysterious life coaching company taking over people's lives and ripping families apart.

As the investigation hots up, the group fights back, and there's a surreal final showdown.

    The last episode was gold
I love cult related investigations. This one was less morbid than many which was welcomed. I feel for victims and families. The last episode was pure gold. I commend the journalist who was 7 months pregnant. Confronting Paul Waugh was courageous as he spews his absolute nonsense and quite literally sounds like a maniac. Bravo!

No real consequences for this abuse
Brava to the team for this diligently and compassionately researched series. It’s so sad to me that there are no real consequences for this “leader”’s criminality or that of his enablers, how ever groomed they have been. Very sad for the families whose loved ones are still stuck and may not return.

    A very coach-y cult
Definitely binge-worthy! Appreciated learning some new info about the topic. Like so many (if not most) life coach scammers it involves an almost hard to believe history. Still trying to figure out what makes it so “very British” though, because as the producer says, this could (if it hasn’t already) happen in your neighborhood! Would love an update. Love to all who are healing from cult experiences

I’m sure this story is not over. I’d love to hear more.

    Excellent
Well researched and very engaging. I don’t understand the complaints about the title. It’s an expose on a cult based in UK. Excellent. Binged all the episodes. Healing to all who left and hopefully will leave in the future.

    Wow!
Such a wonderfully researched podcast. People think cults are more like the Manson Family or Jim Jones’ cult but this group hit all of the signs of a cult. Interesting!

    Why this title?
Great podcast, but why’d you pick that title? What about this is “very British” beyond the accents? It’s a basic confidence scam, run in every country in the world. Would’ve been more useful and impactful to call it “How Paul Waugh / Lighthouse Scammed People Out of Their Money.”

    Wow
This is just amazing, good work done as you address this. Wow! Have you looked into the Aftermath Foundation? Created by former Scientologists. They help people getting our or wanting to get out of high control situations. Keep up the good work. These patterns are there, just need people to keep uncovering them and governmental systems to take appropriate steps to support survivors and break down these situations.

    Great: in so many ways
The cadence, the depth, the silences , the content, the humanity; exposing sociopathic, megalomaniacal thief & opportunist extraordinaire Paul Waugh. If you meet him, run, & don’t look back.

    A very English cult indeed
A very English cult is well worth the listen and it’s shocking to know this exists in England where English people are victims.

    Excellent!
Proof of what a fraud Waugh is: he’s taken a page directly out of Scientology. It’s remarkable how similar Lighthouse is. From the recordings (auditing in Scientology) to the retribution enacted to those who leave the cult or question/investigate them. Loved this podcast, very well constructed and binge worthy!

    Bingeworthy!
I listened to this in one sitting, which I never do, and was fascinated. I’m a South African living in Johannesburg and it was strange to hear that accent and sad to hear Paul’s deception and delusion. We’ll done to those who’ve got out and going the rest get out too.

    Fascinating
This is a story for anyone who thinks that cults need to be religious. Absolutely wild to hear these stories and to see how one person can manipulate those who seem “too smart” to fall for these schemes. So well made and deeply researched.
  • FireVaney
    Riveting. Terrifying. Brilliant.
Is Paul Waugh the most manipulative, sociopathic megalomaniac in the UK? One thing’s for sure, Catrin Nye is among the most intrepid of BBC’s first rate reporters. I look forward to the sequel: A Very American Cult: Scientology.

    Binged It
Lighthouse is another example of anyone can be lured into a cult Having the actual recordings was incredible to see how manipulative the process is

    Wow, must listen
Incredible and disturbing investigation into a cult disguised as a life coaching service. I couldn’t help but binge the whole thing. So well told and produced — would highly recommend!!

Reasonably well told but a little dull
This cult leader just seems a bit pathetic. He claims to have made his first million by 24, first hundred million by early thirties, and would’ve been worth 10-20 billion today, if he hadn’t dropped it all to generously coach average people. Except of course it just wouldn’t be reasonable for him to work for less than all of your life savings, so better morgage the house asap. And in exchange for everything you’ve saved over the course of your entire life, what do you get? mandatory 12 hour daily phone calls where he rants maniacally about random topics. The journalists act like we’re buying this whole thing: when they check out his background they’re “stunned to find no evidence of his business empire - despite his obvious enormous success, almost nobody has heard of him.” What!? He’s not really an unstable billionaire who left it all behind to become a cult leader? It’s just a random narcissist with a pretty dumb story who happened to meet a bunch of people at a vulnerable moment in their lives. if you want to listen to a cult story, maybe try the Manson family or something, this guy just really isn’tworth your attention.

    Bingeworthy
I read a review about this in The Guardian and listened to all of it in an afternoon while walking. It’s shocking and very sad. I recommend it.
