Ten Junk Miles

Running #34

A lighthearted conversation by runners about their lives as runners and the issues that are interesting or important to them and guests of the show. TJM is meant to be a companion to you as you run. Think of us as your running partners on days when you just need some friends to get you out on an easy run. The show is composed of 10 segments, one for each mile, and every 10 minutes or so we move on to the next topic, to keep things interesting. Among the hosts' experience are ten 100-mile finishes, dozens of half and full marathons, plenty of 50-milers, and some speedy 5ks and a BQ (and a handful of DNFs).Your host, Scotty Kummer is an attorney, doberman owner and quite possibly the most painstakingly average runner known to man. Scott has stumbled through numerous plus 4 and 5 hour marathons. He's DNF'ed the 150 mile, 100 mile, 50 mile and marathon distance. Okay, and he is a member of the Order of the Hrimthurs for having completed the Arrowhead 135, the Tuscobia 160 and the Actif Epica 120K in the same calendar year (more people have walked on the moon) as well as finshed 50+ ultramarathons including several 100 mile races. He was once kicked out of an ultra runing group due to allegations of cyber-bullying. He has a habit of offending people by accident while trying to help them. He is a co-founder of the Flatlander Ultrarunners in Chicagoland which has rapidly grown to over 2000 members. He came up with the idea for Ten Junk Miles after becoming frustrated with hearing interview after interview of Scott Jurek and deciding that runners needed more: more discussions of bathroom breaks that went wrong, pacer stories from hell, DNF reports, stories of getting lost on the trail and other related matters.More at http://www.tenjunkmiles.com

    Awesome podcast!
I gotta be honest. I had to research how to provide a review for a podcast and I am a tech professional. Gotta go to the show page and not on an episode šŸ˜‚ I never used to listen to anything while running but my friend, Gio, would mention you guys so I gave it a listen. The early shows were rough but still fun. Now, you guys are my running friends 130 gang shows in. So much about the show is ā€˜familiarā€™. Itā€™s like the same conversations with my friends! I have gotten older and slowed down so it is harder to keep up with my run club friends and you guys have become my trail partners. Keep it up! Love the show

    Itā€™s more than a podcast, itā€™s a community
Iā€™ve been listening for years. It was one of the sources of inspiration to move into ultra running. Fun and friendly community of people!

    TJM- best (running) podcast!
Began listening in 2020 when I my running went to mostly solo runs. It served its purpose as being the running friends for those who donā€™t have that. Continue to listen to the crew on not only some of my solo runs, but also on car rides, flights and even while working when I just need a distraction. The gang shows are the best- the banter, laughs, and witty discussions are always entertaining. When other podcasts I listen to have disappeared, Scottie and TJM gang continue to entertain!

    More Than A Podcast
This podcast (and racing company) has been like a second family to me. I started listening and was invited out to the races. I made friends instantly and enjoyed listening to them on the podcast. Gang shows for entertainment, MTN to get to know people before even meeting them (in some cases) and inspiring stories on the long run. In addition, this podcast, its listenership and runners have all been instrumental in helping build a business inside the trail ultra world. Scott, specifically, has never asked for anything I return. I am truly grateful for the community built. Jason C. Venckus, known more commonly as REGAIN

TJM is a lifestyle and a podcast.
Ten Junk Miles separates itself from other running podcasts with its lighthearted Gang Shows, interviews, both short and long with people that humanize the ups and downs of a running lifestyle. Please listen, laugh, cry and shake your head at the most epic running podcast there is.

    A first time listener
I am new to the podcast and my first episode was Emilyā€™s interview. I have to admit to experiencing a variety of emotions while listening-tears,laughter sadness and joy. Listening to you two speak about your moms made me wish my own mom had been able to see me run just one race before she passed. I started running in my late 30ā€™a as a way to cope with the stress of a dysfunctional marriage. My family probably thought it was a phase- but here I am 20+ years later and still running ! (Without the marriage) I also appreciated when you both said losing your pet was almost as bad as losing your parent. I felt the same way but never wanted to speak that. ā¤ļø I look forward to listening to more episodes on my long runs as well as purchasing Emilyā€™s book.

I love this podcast. Stoked to have been a guest. Thanks, Scott!

    Scotty is a superb interviewer!
I just listened to my first episode of this podcast because he was interviewing Sally McRae. I was blown away with how profound the conversation was. Scotty was so good at listening to what she said and asking leading questions. So much goodness in this conversation! I'm looking forward to listening to other episodes of the podcast.

    Your podcast friends and more
Entertaining and engaging, irreverent and sporadically nsfw. You will laugh and shout out things on the trail in response to what this group (your idiot podcast friends) are saying. Guests range from the elite, sub-elite,sub-sub-elite, to non-elite and mid-back of the pack. All are welcome and seen as valid - running their own race (or non-race adventures). Generally unfiltered, topics cover all the ridiculous and sometimes gross challenges and experiences that happen to runners on & off the trail. (Ie the things youā€™ll talk about to other runners at an IRL race that non runners donā€™t understand much less talk to complete strangers about.) Plenty of content between gang shows and long runs (still trying to listen to all the ā€œmeet the nationā€ episodes). Have gotten me through training cycles for many halfā€™s & one full marathon. The midwestern focus (and Scottā€™s pronunciation of sorry as Sore-ey) take me right back to growing up in the 414. Donā€™t know how or where I originally heard of them (wltt?) but am glad I did.

    Best of the Best
Scotty is the best long run host. (Period). Hope his gang shows never go away. Best way to decompress and reflect on the things that really matter. ( Friendship, family, and having a good time).

Entertaining Podcast for runners or anyone with a sense of humor.
Always entertaining. A lot of opinionated yet unpretentious commentary on the world of running. Iā€™m looking forward to meeting you all at the Badger!

Where would my long runs be without my TJM? Nine years ago I could not even run around the block. After completing a C25K (which is the gateway drug to running) I fell in love with running and started increasing my mileage. TJM is my go to for all those double digit runs. Over the years I have laughed, cried, and been inspired by this pod. My goal: fly from California to WI and run my first 50k at the Badger! Keep moving forward!

Ok fine. Iā€™ll write a review.
I started listening because of Kent Cowgill. Then started listening from the beginning because I canā€™t not. But I just jumped ahead because of Oscar Delgado. Now Iā€™ll go back to where I left off in 2017. Good to hear not much has changed in the next 6-7 years. I think thatā€™s good? I only listened while running for a while, but Iā€™m dealing with some plantar fasciitis so now Iā€™m listening while doing a jigsaw puzzle. Iā€™ll catch up eventually. Oh yeah and I enjoy the show. Relatable, funny and my only issue is when someone starts eating food into the mic šŸ˜. #misophonia Might run St Pats this year. Wonder if that is still a TJM thing. Already signed up for a Ragnar, Run Woodstock and Hungerford. Gotta heal up!

Love this podcast (all types). There are days I am procrastinating going for my run and I just have to say I need to listen to Ten Junk Miles and I am out the door. Thanks Gang and Scott!

    My favorite podcast
Scotty and gang are the best! TJM is a must listen for me on all runs and the countless miles I drive for work. The show is both hilarious and informative, making it the best running podcast out there.

    Love this show!
Hi! I have listened and loved this show for years!! Thank you for all of the fun and informative shows through the years!! You mean a lot to me and hope to meet sometime at the Badger!
  • Marathoner-in-Training
    Great for passing the time!
The show is great for passing the time no matter what it is that youā€™re doing. It has its serious moments and it has its funny moments and it has its moments that youā€™re thinking, ā€œDid they just say that?ā€ My favorite episode is when Aaron is talking about using the lambs ear as toilet paper. I hope he knows that lambs ear grows in the Midwest, too. Iā€™m a fairly new listener and just started at the beginning, but I have switched to listening to newer shows just to see whatā€™s going on now, and sorry to hear that Scott is thinking about ending the show. It makes me sad, but luckily I have 700 other already existing shows to listen to. Iā€™m giving four out of five stars because I miss the original gang, including Kat and Corey. I am a trail runner, but not yet an ultra runner, but this show gives me a lot of inspiration and insight as well as the confidence to believe that I am capable of doing a 50 or 100 mile run. Thank you for the entertainment and education.

A show full of all the feels
This show has gotten me through injuries, rehabs, DNFs DNDs and even a few successes. Iā€™ve laughed with Scotty & crew, cried and even yelled out a few answers while on the trail. Still trying to find myself but I know you have gotten me closer. -Chris is Growing His Hair Out for Maggieā€™s Wigs for Kids
  • Super awesome fish
    Meh
Not particularly interesting or informative in terms of ultra trail. Mostly shock jock entertainment about random topics. Iā€™d look elsewhere for useful insights into the sport. Sharp is one of the more insufferable returning guests.

Itā€™s my absolute favorite running podcast. Warning: it may make ultra running seem accessible and fun. At least it did for me.

Took me too many years to figure out how to leave a review
The TJM podcast is the company you need for that long solo run through the woods. They make you laugh, they make you think, they make you realize we are all in this thing called life together. Hop on their bandwagon, you wonā€™t regret it.

    Awesome Crew
Scotty and his crew are great people and crack me up during gang shows. Never a dull run with Scotty doing interviews or group pods.
  • Very entertaing show
    Great show
Started listening to the show about 2 years ago. I love listening to it when I run. I especally like the gang shows, they keep me laughing. Scott you also do a great job with the long interviews. You have a great style. I hope you go way past mid 2024 with the show. Keep this up for many years. Please.

Easily the best podcast at fostering community
Scott Kummer always aims to be your ā€œrunning friendā€ in this podcast. Without a doubt does he achieve this in every era of this show. Whether itā€™s getting to know the average runner, getting to really know all-time elites like Camille or Dusty, or learning who Fappy is, thereā€™s something for anyone vaguely interested in running in this space. Almost every episode has some trinket that will leave you feeling inspired or emboldened, even if itā€™s just to be yourself in some way, shape or form. Because every episode showcases how individuality is one of the most powerful things anyone can have. Beyond all of that, the community thatā€™s arisen from listeners, shines on its own. Hosts and guests become that parasocial friend that all comes together during the TJM races. The fact that the races alone have become so widely attended, shows just how popular and how high quality this podcast is. And finally, ā€œbonk line, go screw yourselfā€

    99 what???
99 times infinity I would rate this podcast a five star. Scottie and the crew are the best. You all helped my laugh again. Iā€™m loving the evolution of the podcast. After listening to current state and the going back to the beginning, I canā€™t wait to see how you got to where you are! Gang shows are my fav, but I love meeting the nation too, looking forward to truly meeting people in person. Long runs are good too. Thanks for doing this and creating a world where all types of runners are celebrated, youā€™re the best!

    Seven Years
Update: Episode 30 is my fav so far! Hilarious! Here I am, 2023, listening to all the episodes incorrectly, in chronological order. Iā€™m up to April 2016 and I canā€™t stop listening because I had to find out about Corey, Aaron and Kat. I understand the change with Corey now. Does Aaron get to run again? Does Kat come back? What about the Mexican girl?? So many questions and I donā€™t even desire to run an ultra lol but I enjoy listening. I love being introduced to so many amazing people! I hope someone interviews Scotty someday. I canā€™t wait to hear all about life changes and how the running talk changes through the years - 7 more to go!

    Enjoyable Side Trails
Ten Junk Miles is a great podcast to immerse yourself into the squirrel cage minds of trail runners. Whether you are out on a run by yourself of attending to other mundane tasks of daily life, TJM offers a great diversion to feel a connection with trail runners everywhere. Scotty and the gang share stories and good natured banter that will either leave you cringing or laughing. Maybe both. The formats include the gang show, long run interviews and short Meet the Nation shows. All offer depth and breadth within the trail running universe. Aside from Scotty, the cast of characters evolves and changes over time, but listeners will develop a connection and comradery with the players of the day.

Love the TJM crew and their meandering conversations about running and a million other hilarious topics. A podcast that exemplifies the best that running communities have to offer.

    My fav running podcast
I love this for it's broad topics and that it's not about the metrics of running. It's about all the qualitative things that running brings to people's lives. Scotts interview style is simply amazing and he elicits such interesting and deep stories and information from people that I'm constantly engaged and inspired. No more bob Dylan story please šŸ¤£.

    It's like running with friends...
...I think. I mostly run alone, so I don't really know. But if you run, for any distance, give Ten Junk Miles a try. The group is hilarious and obviously are good friends. The podcast isn't overly formal or stuffy and the structure doesn't get in the way of good conversation. It's great and I really enjoy the shows!

    5 Star running pod
Multi formatted podcast to keep you company on your runs. In the Long run episodes, Scott does a great job of the in-depth one on one conversations with a variety of interesting guests. The Chaos of the Gang Show is highly entertaining, at some point you will burst out laughing.

Inspired me to my first Ultra
Stumbled across TJM while running 5.4 miles on my 54th birthday. Got hooked and inspired to train to run a full 54 on my own. Couldn't have done it without the conversation, laughter, advice, and inspiration from my podcast friends. Now on to an organized 50 at the Badger! Thanks TJM gang!
