Hollywood, The Sequel

Hollywood has been brought to its metaphorical knees by the pandemic. Production has stopped. Easy funding has dried up. Audiences are holed up and anxious. International alliances (China) may be broken. And no one knows when any of it will change.

Hollywood, The Sequel is a limited-run podcast series in which leading journalist John Horn asks some of the most important and influential people in film, television and entertainment at large (established stars and emerging taleånt) about how they hope Hollywood will change in this moment of severe disruption.

    To woke so soon.
Made it one minute and 15 seconds into Kerry Washington’s wokeness and I was done. That industry & town has been very much exposed as sleazy, rapey, misogynist, racist, soul crushing, treat people like garbage industries there is and the first thing this podcast does is preach wokeness. I’m done.

Where’s the diversity in this panel?
This podcast supposedly focuses on bringing diversity into Hollywood, yet the first three guests are all African-American, followed by some Caucasians and Latinx. But where are the Asian voices? Asians are the largest population on the planet (60% total) with India snd China together comprising 36% of global population, yet seem to always get short-shrift when it comes to inclusion regarding diversity in the States. So strange.

Needs to Introduce Different Topics of injustice
While this podcast brings up some really important points and has some pretty high profile interviews, I was disappointed as it does feel like it’s interviewing people about more or less about the same talking points of inequality, rather than the systemic inequalities of the business as a whole. Yes, absolutely Hollywood’s historic racial and gender inequalities are of upmost importance to be addressed. But only addressing these issues will scratch the surface of what is intrinsically wrong with Hollywood’s business model, which feeds into these inequalities. What about its deeply problematic hiring structure? The unpaid internships and full-time assistants who are paid peanuts, exacerbating inequality, creating a pay-to-play environment just for the wealthy, and further displacing minority access? What about grueling and dangerous 12 hour work days and work place injuries? These stories also need to be told and there’s no doubt the pandemic will change these things in the industry for better or worse, but I really do hope this podcast goes deeper and addresses more of these linked systemic issues with the business. Interviewing big celebs and CEOs is only going to get this show so far.

    Not the best start
I love listening to John Horn & I really miss The Frame, but this show is definitely not as good as The Frame. 25 minutes is just too long on a single interview. Kerry Washington is very well spoken & intelligent, but in the last 10 or so minutes the questions start to get weak and I just wished there would be a new infusion of guest or topic.
